Just a month after tennis legend Serena Williams stated her plans to evolve away from the sport, the tennis world was rocked by other shocking news. Roger Federer, one of the sport’s all- time greats, announced his plans to retire from playing in major tournaments.
Federer has had an illustrious career spanning more than 20 years. He has won over 100 titles and is one of the few players to achieve a career grand slam (winning all four grand slam tournaments). The 20 grand slam tournaments that he has won have only been outdone by two other 15 players. On top of that, he holds the record for most consecutive weeks at number one in the world with 237.
Despite having such an acclaimed career, the last few years have been a struggle for Federer. He underwent two knee operations in 2020, and his last competitive match was in 2021. Federer, who is now 41 years old, acknowledged that while he has worked hard to return to competitive form, he understands the limits of his body. His final match was at the 2022 Laver Cup.
Not surprisingly, Federer received an outpouring of support from people worldwide following the announcement. Rafael Nadal, his longtime rival and friend, said in a message he was sad to hear the news but felt privileged to have played against Federer. Even the Wimbledon Championships, one of the sport’s most prestigious events, released a statement expressing gratitude for the tennis great and eight-time Wimbledon champion.
